What to watch in theaters and at home this weekend April 26-28, 2024

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — I'll be playing catch up with "Challengers" partly because Luca Guadagnino is frequently interesting and Zendaya is usually fantastic. I'll also be seeing it because it appears to be divisive among my colleagues.

I can, however, highly recommend “We Grown Now,” a drama about two ten-year-old friends living in Chicago’s Cabrini-Green public housing who, following an act of violence, find themselves on the cusp of radical change. There’s a hopefulness to the film that feels earned, rather than just wished for.

Those looking for a genre film have the action thriller “Boy Kills World” starring Bill Skarsgård or the Indonesian horror thriller “Dancing Village: The Cure Begins” (a prequel to the incredibly popular “KKN di Desa Penari”).

Those looking for something a little more family friendly can stay home and stream Paramount’s “Knuckles,” a film set in the Sonic the Hedgehog Universe; or Disneynature’s “Tiger” on Disney+.

Other options include the debut of the second season of “The Big Door Prize” on Apple TV+, the fourth season of “We’re Here” on Max, “Infested” on Shudder, or "Thank You, Good Night: The Bon Jovi Story"on Hulu.

We Grown Now (Theaters)

Studio Synopsis: In 1992 Chicago, as Michael Jordan solidifies himself as a champion, a story of two young legends in their own right begins. As wide-eyed and imaginative best friends Malik and Eric traverse the city, looking to escape the mundaneness of school and the hardships of growing up in public housing, their unbreakable bond is challenged when tragedy shakes their community just as they are learning to fly.

Challengers (Theaters)

Studio Synopsis: From visionary filmmaker Luca Guadagnino, Challengers stars Zendaya as Tashi Duncan, a former tennis prodigy turned coach and a force of nature who makes no apologies for her game on and off the court. Married to a champion on a losing streak (Mike Faist – West Side Story), Tashi’s strategy for her husband’s redemption takes a surprising turn when he must face off against the washed-up Patrick (Josh O’Connor – The Crown) – his former best friend and Tashi’s former boyfriend. As their pasts and presents collide, and tensions run high, Tashi must ask herself, what will it cost to win.

Boy Kills World (Theaters)

Studio Synopsis: A dystopian fever dream action film that follows Boy, a deaf person with a vibrant imagination. When his family is murdered, he is trained by a mysterious shaman to repress his childish imagination and become an instrument of death.

Dancing Village: The Curse Begins

Studio Synopsis: In this horror-thriller, a shaman instructs Mila to return a mystical bracelet, the Kawaturih, to the “Dancing Village,” a remote site on the easternmost tip of Java Island. Joined by her cousin, Yuda, and his friends Jito and Arya, Mila arrives on the island only to discover that the village elder has passed away, and that the new guardian, Mbah Buyut, isn’t present. Various strange and eerie events occur while awaiting Mbah Buyut’s return, including Mila being visited by Badarawuhi, a mysterious, mythical being who rules the village. When she decides to return the Kawaturih without the help of Mgah Buyut, Mila threatens the village’s safety, and she must join a ritual to select the new “Dawuh,” a cursed soul forced to dance for the rest of her life.

Knuckles Premiere (Paramount+)

Studio Synopsis: The new live-action event series follows Knuckles on a hilarious and action-packed journey of self-discovery as he agrees to train Wade as his protégé and teach him the ways of the echidna warrior. The series takes place between the films Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Tiger (Disney+)

Studio Synopsis: Narrated by Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Disneynature's “Tiger” lifts the veil on our planet’s most revered and charismatic animal, inviting viewers to journey alongside Ambar, a young tigress raising her cubs in the fabled forests of India. Curious, rambunctious, and at times a bit clumsy, the cubs have a lot to learn from their savvy mother who will do all she can to keep them safe from pythons, bears, and marauding male tigers. Directed by Mark Linfield, co-directed by Vanessa Berlowitz and Rob Sullivan, and produced by Linfield, Berlowitz and Roy Conli, “Tiger” is the groundbreaking culmination of 1,500 days of filming. Combining fast-paced action with remarkably intimate moments, Disneynature’s all-new original feature film streams on Disney+ beginning on Earth Day, April 22, 2024.

The Big Door Prize: Season Two (Apple TV+)

Studio Synopsis: Based on M.O. Walsh’s novel, "The Big Door Prize" season two follows the residents of Deerfield as the Morpho machine readies them for the mysterious “next stage.” As everyone’s potentials are exchanged for visions, new relationships form and new questions are asked. Dusty and Cass decide to take time apart while Trina (Amara) and Jacob (Fourlas) learn that they can shed their old labels. Giorgio and Izzy each find romance while Hana and Father Reuben attempt to discover the purpose of the machine. The small town is once again left questioning what they thought they knew about their lives, relationships, potentials, and about the Morpho itself.

We're Here: Season 4 (Max)

Studio Synopsis: This season follows renowned drag queens, Sasha Velour, Priyanka, Jaida Essence Hall, and Latrice Royale, as they continue the show’s mission of spreading love and connection through the art of drag across small-town America. The queens work with participants in Murfreesboro, Tennessee and Tulsa, Oklahoma, as well as in surrounding towns, and take an in-depth, immersive look at recent anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, and the effect it has had on the community.

Infested (Shudder)

Studio Synopsis: Residents of a rundown French apartment building battle against an army of deadly, rapidly reproducing spiders. Starring Théo Christine (Suprêmes), Finnegan Oldfield (Final Cut), Jérôme Niel (Smoking Causes Coughing), Sofia Lesaffre (Les Misérables) and Lisa Nyarko.
