WASHINGTON (SBG) — Alex Trebek has chosen the person he believes could take over "Jeopardy!" in the future.

She's a girl and you could say his choice is "golden." The longtime game show host suggested Betty White, 98, be his successor.

Trebek is 80 years old and has been longtime friends with White. Trebek said he jokingly selected White because the audience expects someone younger.

"I joke with the audience all the time and I say, 'Betty White,' because they want somebody younger, somebody funnier," he said. "Betty and I have been friends for a long, long time."

The host said he doesn't plan on leaving the show anytime soon, though. He's been at the helm of the show since 1984.

He told "Good Morning America" that he will continue working for as long as possible.

Trebek said he is doing well despite being diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer last year.
