Bill Maher rails against Trump, says Democrats are 'still a sane party' compared to GOP

HUNT VALLEY, Md. (TND) — While comedian Bill Maher does not hesitate to share his disagreements with the current Democratic party, he has been voicing support for the political organization on his new book tour.

The 68-year-old has been arguing that the Democrats are the saner of the two modern American political parties during media appearances promoting his new book, “What This Comedian Said Will Shock You.”

Maher teased the book's release in a tweet Tuesday, calling it something of an encyclopedia for every "good" thing he has ever said in his life.

Maher has spent time portions of his tour stops railing against former President Donald Trump, the current state of the Republican Party, and what he calls the "woke stuff."

However, President Joe Biden also found himself a target of the comedian's ire, especially when it comes to his age and the 2024 campaign.

He unloaded on Biden during a Tuesday appearance on "The View" for being too old -- and showing his age -- for re-election and for the 81-year-old man subjecting himself to another grueling presidential campaign.

He called the president "cadaver-like" on the show, suggesting Biden risks becoming "Ruth Bader Biden" -- a reference to late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, who held onto her position until she died. Some Democrats believe her decision not to retire during the Obama era gave Trump an opening to pack the court with conservative justices.

"She didn't take the hint and she was not in good health, and she stayed too long," Maher said, adding: "I said Biden shouldn't do that." After laying into Biden's age, Maher expressed anger that prosecutors waited years to bring up criminal charges against Trump.

Waiting until nearly four years after he left office to bring up charges allowed the presumptive Republican presidential nominee to "run out the clock," he argued, referring to the November elections. He put the blame on Democrats, whom he said, "do this every time."

Maher picked up that train of thought on Monday night during a rowdy back and forth with on Fox News.

Trump is someone who does not concede elections. That's the most important thing. He didn't concede the last election. He's not going to concede this election," he told host Greg Gutfeld, who argued Trump had willingly left the White House.

The former president is facing 91 criminal indictments, with one of federal cases involving his alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election.

Maher lobbed barbs at the Republican Party on CNN, telling host Anderson Cooper the GOP in Congress is "just there to do performative nonsense." He cited Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., as a prime example, saying the Georgia congresswoman is neither "interested in legislation" nor does she know how it works.

For years, Maher has fashioned himself as a political chameleon with moderately liberal views who is more interested in criticizing political correctness than espousing doctrinaire political beliefs.

In past interviews, he has said he favors putting an end to corporate welfare as well legalizing gambling, prostitution and cannabis. However, Maher has also said he supports the death penalty, pitting him to the right of many left-leaning Democrats.
