Billy Joel surprises fans with first performance following brain disorder diagnosis
Billy Joel is an unstoppable performer.
The “Piano Man” singer appeared on stage with the Billy Joel cover band Turnstiles to celebrate their 30th anniversary on Friday in Wellington, Fla.
"I wasn't planning on working tonight," Joel joked as he sat down at the band’s keyboard, per The Palm Beach Post. He played two songs, “We Didn’t Start the Fire” and “Big Shot,” with his two daughters, Della and Remy, and wife Alexis Roderick, joining him on stage.
Video captured by fans showed Joel walking on to the stage with the assistance of a cane.
Joel was clearly in good spirits, joking with the band about what song he should play, with one of the Turnstiles members quipping, "A Billy Joel song, how about?"
The iconic singer replied, "I can give it a try. I know the guy who wrote it."
Joel’s surprise appearance marks the first time he’s returned to the stage since announcing he was diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) in May 2025. The condition happens when cerebrospinal fluid accumulates in the brain's ventricles, leading to cognitive impairment, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
Joel shared the news on social media at the time, also announcing he would be canceling all future touring dates because of his issues related to the condition.
"Under his doctor's instructions, Billy is undergoing specific physical therapy and has been advised to refrain from performing during this recovery period,” his statement read. “Billy is thankful for the excellent care he is receiving and is fully committed to prioritizing his health. He is grateful for the support from fans during this time and looks forward to the day when he can once again take the stage."
