Clinton faces tough, awkward questions from Zach Galifianakis
WASHINGTON (Sinclair Broadcast Group) — On the day she was diagnosed with pneumonia earlier this month, Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton sat down with comedian Zach Galifianakis for an at times painfully awkward interview.
Clinton’s appearance on “Between Two Ferns,” posted by Funny or Die Thursday, is the latest of many attempts by this year’s presidential candidates to humanize themselves through humor. Clinton and Republican nominee Donald Trump both appeared on “The Tonight Show” in the last week.
It comes at a time when Clinton is stepping up her outreach to millennial voters who support her by smaller margins than young voters backed Barack Obama in previous cycles. A recent Quinnipiac poll showed her lead among 18-to-34-year-olds has dropped from 24 points to 5 points in the last month.
Much of the interview consists of Galifianakis asking random and/or offensive questions like “Any regrets over losing the Scott Baio vote?” and “When you see how well it works for Donald trump, do you ever think to yourself, 'Oh, maybe I should be more racist?'”
Clinton’s response is often either a silent stare or a deadpan comment like “I really regret doing this” or “Don’t tell me what to say.”
Galifianakis mocks Clinton’s fashion sense, describing her pants suits as looking like “a librarian from outer space.” He also jokes about sexist perceptions of the former secretary of state, wondering what happens if she gets pregnant as president.
He takes several shots at Trump, asking if Michelle Obama wrote Melania Trump’s vows at his wedding, which Clinton attended, and joking that Trump should wear a “white power tie” at the first presidential debate next week.
At the end of the interview, Galifianakis suggests that he and Clinton should keep in touch.
“What’s the best way to reach you? Email?” he asks. She does not respond.
