Brendan Dassey's attorneys again push for release

GREEN BAY, Wisc. (WLUK) - Brendan Dassey's attorneys continue to push for his release while the state pursues an appeal of the order vacating his conviction for killing Teresa Halbach.

After a federal judge overturned Dassey's conviction, prosecutors announced they would appeal that ruling.

Meantime, Dassey's attorneys want him freed on bond. Earlier this month, prosecutors argued Dassey should stay behind bars.

In a 12-page document filed Tuesday, Dassey's attorneys argue the state misinterpreted the judge's previous rulings.

"In short, the Respondent’s arguments against bond are conclusory, ill-supported, and not worthy of any weight. Petitioner Brendan Dassey therefore respectfully asks this Court to grant him his freedom by issuing a recognizance bond pending the Respondent’s appeal or, in the alternative, a bond with a reasonable and affordable surety," wrote attorney Laura Nirider.

Dassey and his uncle, Steven Avery, are serving life prison terms after being convicted of killing Halbach in 2005. Their stories were profiled in the hit Netflix documentary series "Making a Murderer."
