Denzel Washington explains why he’s 'not that interested in Oscars'
Denzel Washington is a two-time Oscar winner, but he doesn’t do it for the gold.
“I don’t do it for Oscars, I don’t really care about that stuff,” Washington said during his interview on “Jake’s Takes.”
He continued, “I’ve been at this a long time and there’s time when I won and shouldn’t have won and then didn’t win and should’ve won. Man gives the award. God gives the reward.”
“I’m not that interested in Oscars. People ask me, ‘Where do I keep it?’ Well, next to the other one,” Washington said with a laugh.
The “Highest 2 Lowest” star added, “I’m not bragging! Just telling you how I feel about it. On my last day, [Oscars] aren’t going to do me a bit of good.”
After host Jake Hamilton commented, “I don’t think God ever asks how many Oscars do you have,” Washington joked, “He [God] might go, ‘That’s why I gave you an extra week.’ [As] long as he says, ‘Now, get on up here,’ I’m all right.”
Washington won his first Oscar in the best supporting actor category for his work in 1989’s “Glory,” and picked up his second win for 2001’s “Training Day,” in the best leading actor category.
Many awards watchers thought Washington was snubbed from another nomination this last year for his work in “Gladiator II.”
But Washington was the definition of unbothered.
When asked by The New York Times if he cared about not getting the nomination, he said, “I was sitting there smiling, going: ‘Look at you. On the day you didn’t get a nomination for an Oscar, you’re working on ‘Othello’ on Broadway. Are you kidding me?’”
