'Dukes of Hazzard' star dead at 79
Richard “Rick” Hurst, best known for his role as Deputy Cletus Hogg on “The Dukes of Hazzard,” has died at age 79.
His first wife, Candace Kaniecki told TMZ he died Thursday morning and that it was unexpected and the cause of death is currently unknown.
Hurst’s “Dukes of Hazzard” co-star Ben Jones, who played Cooter on the show, also confirmed his death to The New York Times.
A fan page for the show paid tribute to the late actor, saying, “To fans, he was more than a character—he was family. His gentle smile, impeccable comedic timing, and kind-hearted spirit made every scene brighter.”
"Off-screen, Rick was known for his generosity, humility, and love for connecting with fans at events across the country," the post continued. "Whether it was a reunion special or a meet-and-greet at Cooter’s, he never stopped sharing his joy with the people who adored him."
Hurst appeared on “The Dukes of Hazzard” from 1980 to 1983, and reprised his role in two TV movies, “The Dukes of Hazzard: Reunion!” and “The Dukes of Hazzard: Hazzard in Hollywood.”
He was also known for his roles in films like “Steel Magnolias,” “Earth Girls Are Easy,” and “The Karate Kid Part III,” as well as appearances on TV series like “Little House on the Prairie,” “M*A*S*H,” and “The Wonder Years.”
