'Home Alone' star Macaulay Culkin answers fan questions about the iconic movie
“Home Alone” is a holiday classic, but even after over 30 years, fans still have questions about the movie.
Luckily, the film’s star, Macaulay Culkin, answered those burning queries on an episode of the YouTube show “Hot Ones” this week.
First up, fans speculated he improvised the classic line “You guys give up? Or are you thirsty for more?”
Culkin, who was only 9 years-old during filming of the movie, conceded that while he can’t take credit for that line, he can take credit for another classic moment.
“When I was at the grocery store, it's like, ‘Where are your parents? Why won't you tell me?’ and I said, ‘Because you're a stranger’ that one was mine, I did a lot of that kind of stuff.”
In another scene, Culkin’s character looks at a picture of his brother’s girlfriend and exclaims, “Buzz, your girlfriend, woof!”
For years, it had been claimed that the picture was not of a young girl but a crewmember’s son dressed up as a girl, which Culkin confirmed was the case.
“As far as I know, yes, I mean, you'd have to ask [director] Chris [Columbus], but that's what I was told. Apparently that was the gag,” he said.
He also revealed an interesting piece of behind-the-scenes trivia: his stunt double was actually a 30-year-old man named Larry!
Culkin recalled Larry asking him to guess his age, and Culkin, being just a kid himself, guessed 13, which cracked up the stunt double.
The young Culkin was worried for the safety of his supposedly teenaged friend, remembering that Larry had to do a stunt climbing a collapsing shelf.
“He's climbing the shelf, trying to reach the thing on top, and the whole shelf collapsed. It was vicious that first take, they do it again and there's another take and just boom,” he said.
Culkin continued, “They didn't like the way everything fell. And they do it again, and they do it again, and they do it again and I'm going, ‘Please take it easy on Larry! He's only 13 years old!’”
