Irish music legend Sinéad O'Connor dead at 56

WASHINGTON (TND) — Music legend Sinéad O’Connor has passed away at age 56.

The Irish singer shot to stardom in 1990 with her rendition of Prince's "Nothing Compares 2 U", according to The Irish Times.

O'Connor changed her name in 2018 toShuhada’ Davitt after converting to Islamalthough she continued to use Sinéad O’Connor professionally.

Her passing comes one year after her 17-year-old son, Shane, took his own life after escaping a hospital while on suicide watch.

In one of her last posts on Twitter, she posted a photo of her son Shane with a caption saying, "Been living as undead night creature since. He was the love of my life, the lamp of my soul. We were one soul in two halves. He was the only person who ever loved me unconditionally. I am lost in the bardo without him."

As she continued to grieve her son, her management team released a statement announcing she was canceling her scheduled gigs and would not be performing the rest of 2022.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time,” the singer's family said in a statement to the BBC.

In 1992, she sparked outrage when she tore up a photo of Pope John Paul II while saying, "Fight the real enemy!" during her performance on Saturday Night Live.

She is survived by three children.
