Jennifer Love Hewitt drops iconic line in new 'I Know What You Did Last Summer’ trailer
Another summer, another slasher coming after some attractive 20-somethings.
The full trailer for “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” a sequel to the 1997 horror hit of the same name, dropped today, promising more kills, thrills, and appearances from the stars of the original, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr.
Like the original, in this film, a group of friends cause a deadly car accident on a hot summer night and agree to cover it up, but one year later, they’re being killed off one by one be a vengeful fisherman wielding a bloody hook.
Hewitt and Prinze reprise their roles as Julie James and Ray Bronson, who survived the original and its sequel, “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer,” offering advice to the next generation, including “Outer Banks” star Madelyn Cline, “The Studio” star Chase Sui Wonders, Jonah Hauer-King, Sarah Pidgeon, Gabriette Bechtel and Tyriq Withers.
Sony hosted a preview event for the trailer on their studio lot in Los Angeles, with most of the cast and writer/director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and writer Sam Lansky on hand to tease some of the details.
Getting Hewitt and Prinze on board was a no-brainer, with Robinson saying, “There was no movie without them.”
Robinson continued, “This movie is about how trauma informs and shapes and changes you underneath all the fun screamy gags."
In the trailer, Hewitt also delivers her iconic line from the original, “What are you waiting for?” as a callback for fans, but one that made sense.
“We never wanted to do anything for lack of a better word, ‘gratuitous,’ like for the sake of doing it,” Robinson explained. “The way that we have built the lore of, especially the first movie, into this movie, allowed us to play with things from the original in a way that felt like it was a part of their story as well, rather than it being on top. It is very much woven within the fabric of this new installment.”
As for the new cast, Robinson said that they showed they were perfect for their parts from practically the first audition, which she felt was key to making the whole thing work.
“What makes the first movie iconic is the cast, and so in putting this cast, it wasn’t just about finding people that were perfect for the roles, it was about finding people that were also going to be perfect together because that chemistry is everything.”
Wonders added that the cast’s chemistry was “off the charts” and they bonded together while hanging out on set in Australia.
Concluding the Q&A, hosted by Danny Pellegrino, Robinson and her cast urged people to see the movie in theaters, especially because there are “so many Easter eggs” from the original, according to Wonders.
“I Know What You Did Last Summer” is in theaters July 18.
