Last call: Titles leaving Netflix in July 2020

There's a litany of acclaimed and beloved films leaving Netflix throughout July including "Solo: A Star Wars Story," the Back to the Future trilogy, "Ant-Man and the Wasp," "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial," "Sex and the City 2" and "Stuart Little." There's also a mass exodus of A24 films leaving (some of which I've included in my list below).

Blue Valentine

Director Derek Cianfrance (HBO's "I Know This Much Is True") made quite the splash when "Blue Valentine" made its debut at the Sundance Film Festival 2010. The film starsMichelle Williams and Ryan Goslingas a young couple who fall in love, marry and see their relationship disintegrate. It is brutal, but the performances tremendous and the writing is incredibly sharp. (Leaving 7/4/20)

Locke

I referenced "Locke" in my review of "7500," a new film starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt. "7500" takes place in a cockpit. "Locke," which stars Tom Hardy. is set in a car. "7500" is about a airplane hijacking. "Locke" is about a man driving home to see his family who learns that a co-worker that he had a one night stand with a co-worker who became pregnant and has gone into premature labor. "Locke" is the vastly superior film as Hardy commands your attention. It's a remarkable experience. (Leaving 7/11/20)

Under the Skin

"Under the Skin" stars Scarlett Johansson as an alien being who comes to Earth and seduces a variety of men for a seemingly unknown purpose. She's an outsider in an foreign land. It's the sort of film that is divisive; even among critics. Some see it as high art. Others see it as an empty vessel wrapped in pretty packaging. I love the strangeness of it. (Leaving 7/11/20)

Life After Beth

Horror and comedy have been perfect companions for decades. Throw in a little romance (and a Black Rebel Motorcycle Club score) and you have "Life After Beth." The film sees Dane DeHaan starring as Zach, a young man trying to get over the recent death of his girlfriend Beth (Aubrey Plaza). The major problem being that Beth doesn't stay dead. (Leaving 7/18/20)

Ex Machina

Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson), a programmer at a search engine company, is selected by Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac), his company's genius CEO, to participate in an artificial intelligence experiment. Caleb is introduced toAva (Alicia Vikander), an android with exceptional abilities. An android seemingly capable of love. (Leaving 7/25/20)

Her

Released in 2013, "Her" presented the idea of a lonely man who falls in love with his new operating system's virtual assistant. It didn't feel like an unreasonable leap then and feels like an entirely possible scenario in the modern world. The film stars Joaquin Phoenixand was written, directed, and produced by Spike Jonze ("Being John Malkovich"). (Leaving 7/28/20)

The Edge of Seventeen

Hailee Steinfeld stars as Nadine Franklin, a teen caught in the shadow of Darian, her popular older brother. The situation takes a dramatic turn when Nadine's best friend starts dating Darian, forcing Nadine to turn to her teacher Mr. Bruner (Woody Harrelson) for emotional support. Mr. Bruner would rather she didn't.(Leaving 7/31/20)
