LOS ANGELES (WKRC) - The exact cause of Matthew Perry's death will require further investigation, the medical examiner has indicated.

According to records from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office that were obtained by CNN,additional steps will be taken before the office reaches a conclusion. The medical examiner made the update to its records Sunday afternoon, according to CNN, and listed his cause of death as "deferred."

“In cases where the cause of death cannot be determined at the time of autopsy, a deferred certificate will be issued until additional studies have been completed,” per the L.A. coroner’s guidelines.

According to the network, a autopsy has been completed, and medical examiners were waiting for the results of a toxicology report, which can take weeks to complete.

Examiners planned to use the report to determined whether there were any foreign substances that may have contributed to Perry's death, according to CNN. The network added that the Los Angeles Police Department Robbery-Homicide Division was also investigating, but police confirmed no foul play was suspected in Perry's death.

Per CNN, the office was ready to release the actor's remains to his next of kin.

Perry, who died at the age of 54, was found dead in a stand-alone hot tub, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
