Meghan Markle mocked as 'Salmonella Sussex' after fans call out questionable meal prep
Meghan Markle knows her way around a kitchen, but some fans questioned her methods while preparing her Thanksgiving meal this year.
In a since expired Instagram story covered by Page Six, The Duchess of Sussex shared a clip of herself mixing up seasonings in a bowl and applying the mix onto a raw turkey.
“Let the ‘game’ begin” Markle joked, adding in turkey emojis and a “Get it? #momjokes” mention.
But fans called out the fact that in the footage, the As Ever founder can be seen handling the raw bird while still wearing her gold bracelet and ring with glove-free hands.
That prompted the creation of a Reddit thread, dubbing the “With Love, Meghan” host “Salmonella Sussex."
One harsh criticism read, “She has the worst kitchen hygiene. The ‘domestic’ goddess is clueless. The more she pretends to be a cook, the more fake she shows herself to be.”
“I don’t even put on my jewelry when applying makeup, and I remove them when cooking. Jewelry are [sic] known fomites for infections,” added another.
Some people came to Markle’s defense about not wearing gloves.
“I have a friend who works in the food service industry. I once mentioned gloves as a reassuring sign of hygiene and she said ‘Ohyou can scratch your butt wearing gloves just as easily as you can without them,’” they wrote. “She then alluded to horrors she had seen committed by food prep employees while wearing gloves.”
They added, “So, not only are gloves not a sign of cleanliness, they aredrumrollhorrible for the environment.”
Another person who claimed food service experience said they had a boss who was against gloves, explaining, “His reasoning was that people tend to treat them as a magic talisman (I'm wearing gloves, so everything's okay), rather than thinking about what they were doing.”
Given that there’s no bad news out of the Sussex household this many days later, it seems like this was ultimately a minor kitchen faux pas anyone could have made, and a good reminder for everyone to wash their hands when handling food of any kind.
Markle revealed her Thanksgiving plans in her As Ever newsletter, confirming she was hosting friends and spending the day cooking at the Montecito home she shares with Prince Harry, and their two children, Archie and Lilibet.
“Please know that as I look around my home and see my husband and children, family, dear friends (and also navigate the timing on the turkey and the love and layers that come with hostessing) — I feel grateful,” she wrote. “Wishing you a Thanksgiving with full hearts and full bellies.”
