The blockbuster movie season kicked off strong over Memorial Day weekend thanks to a blend of movies giving something for everyone at the box office, breaking the record set back in 2013 and bringing in $322 million dollars, a positive sign for movie theaters.

#1 Lilo & Stitch

Disney’s live-action remake of “Lilo & Stitch” landed at number to with $183 million in ticket sales, beating out Tom Cruise's "Mission: Impossible" sequel.

Based on the 2002 animated movie of the same name, the story follows a young girl and her older sister in Hawaii who end up adopting an adorable but chaotic little blue alien after he crash-lands on Earth.

#2 Mission: Impossible-The Final Reckoning

Tom Cruise and “Mission: Impossible-The Final Reckoning” landed well behind "Lilo & Stitch" with $77 million, though that number is still a series best for the franchise.

The eighth and final film in the nearly 30-year franchise wrapped up Cruise’s long-running role as super spy Ethan Hunt, not to mention decades worth of death-defying stunts from the movie star.

#3 Final Destination: Bloodlines

Taking the third spot was the horror film “Final Destination: Bloodlines,” which surprisingly earned the top slot on the box office charts in its debut weekend on May 16.

#4 Thunderbolts*

Landing in fourth was Marvel’s “Thunderbolts*” the 36th movie in the comic book universe that has dominated the box office for almost 20 years now.

The asterisk in the title for the movie has since been revealed to relate to a *SPOILER ALERT* new title for the team in the movie, The New Avengers, with the end credits of the film explaining the change.

#5 Sinners

Rounding out the top five was "Sinners," the horror drama starring Michael B. Jordan as twins facing off with vampires.

The movie, directed by Ryan Coogler, has earned major critical praise since its release over a month ago, even generating Oscar buzz for several categories, including music.
