'Mrs. Doubtfire' heads to Broadway 26 years after movie's debut

WASHINGTON (SBG) — Twenty-six years after its release, the hit comedy “Mrs. Doubtfire” is coming to Broadway.

The show will begin with a tryout engagement Nov. 26-Dec. 29 in Seattle, with a first opening debut April 5 at Broadway’s Stephen Sondheim Theatre. Four-time Tony winner Jerry Zaks will direct the performance. John O’Farrell and Karey Kirkpatrick wrote musical’s book, with an original score by Karey and Wayne Kirkpatrick.

“It’s great to be back with Karey, Wayne and John, and working with Jerry has been a dream of mine. They do comedy and family like no one else and bringing this beloved story to life as a hilarious and touching musical comedy is an irresistible opportunity," says producer Kevin McCollum.

In 1993, “Mrs. Doubtfire” the movie, starring Robin Williams, earned $219 million in the U.S. and $222 million internationally. It tells the story of the recently divorced and out-of-work actor Daniel Hillard. To see his kids, Hillard poses as the homely British nanny “Mrs. Doubtfire.”

Rob McClure will play the role of Hillard while Jenn Gambatese will play his ex-wife, Miranda Hillard.

Ticket pre-sales have already started, while public sales begin on Nov. 1.
