New DVD, Blu-ray and digital release highlights for the week of June 21-27, 2021

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — It's a wonderfully eclectic week that includes a healthy selection of Asian animation and Euro genre titles. There's a bit ofBob Odenkirk in there as well.

Digital

• Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train - Based on the manga series byKoyoharu Gotouge, "Mugen Train" is a direct sequel to the first season of the anime. Having earned $500 million at the box office, it is the highest-grossing anime film of all time.

New to DVD and Blu-ray

• Batman: The Long Halloween - Part One - Based on the 13-issue series from writer Jeph Loeb and artist Tim Sale from 1996, "The Long Halloween" is a classic murder mystery that finds a young version of Batman tracking a killer who celebrates their holidays by murdering. The series features the greatest hits of Batman foes:The Joker, Scarecrow, Poison Ivy, Mad Hatter and The Riddler. Loeb's story has been tightened down in this adaptation but the bulk of the story and the general feel of the original narrative is intact (at least to this point). The second half is set to arrive digitally at the end of July and on disc in August. A 4K UHD edition featuring both halves of the story will be released later in the year.
  
• Nobody -Bob Odenkirk stars as Hutch Mansell, a seemingly innocuous nobody. He’s really a former government hitman who has tried his best to fade into the background to be a husband and father. But killing is in Hutch’s blood and he’s itching for an excuse to relapse. Lots of shootouts, fist fights and general mayhem follow. Not on par with “John Wick,” but a reasonably entertaining action thriller spiked with brutal violence.
• The Paper Tigers - A trio of martial artists reunite well after their prime to avenge the murder of their master in this action comedy featuring the talents ofAlain Uy, Ron Yuan, and Mykel Shannon Jenkins. There's more silliness than story but the action sequences are enjoyable.
• The Unholy -Jeffrey Dean Morgan stars asGerry Fenn, a washed-up journalist, who stumbles upon Alice, deaf teen, who appears to be able to perform miracle cures after seeing the Virgin Mary. Believing that this story will revitalize his career, Fenn promotes Alice's abilities without questioning if her abilities come from above or below.

• The Secret World of Arrietty - DirectorHiromasa Yonebayashi's beautifully animated take onMary Norton's "The Borrowers" (co-adapted byHayao Miyazaki andKeiko Niwa) receives a steelbook release.
• The Wind Rises - Also getting the steelbook treatment is "The Wind Rises."Written and directed byHayao Miyazaki, the film is based on the life ofJiro Horikoshi, the designer of theMitsubishi A5M fighter plane.
  
• Visions of Eight - Culled from The Criterion Collection's excellent box set "100 Years of Olympic Films: 1912–2012," "Visions of Eight" features eight short films shot byMilo Forman, Kon Ichikawa, Claude Lelouch, Juri Ozerov, Arthur Penn, Michael Pfleghar, John Schlesinger, and Mai Zetterling from the 1972 Olympic Games inMunich.
• Blood for Dracula 4K UHD - While the 4K release of Paul Morrissey's "Blood for Dracula"has been delayed, this is the perfect opportunity to point those who are interested in picking up Severin Film's release will want to visit the specialty label's Mid-Year sale that runs 6/25 -6/28. Visitwww.severin-films.com. They've also announced plans for a 4K release of "Flesh for Frankenstein."
• The Eurocrypt of Christopher Lee - Christopher Lee made his share of films and I've enjoyed my share of them. This set includes "The Castle of the Living Dead," "Challenge the Devil," "Crypt of the Vampire," "Sherlock Holmes and the Deadly Necklace," "The Torture Chamber of Dr. Sadism" and 24 episodes from the anthology series "Theatre Macabre." With the exception of the Sherlock Holmes film, these are all new to me.
• Irezumi -Otsuya, a beautiful young woman forced to work in a geisha house as a prostitute. Marked with a large tattoo of a spider,Otsuya takes on the attributes of her new marking and plots to have her revenge on Tobukei, the man who runs the brothel. A mix of violence and beauty.
• Years of Lead: Five Classic Italian Crime Thrillers - ThePoliziotteschi subgenre is best described as Italian-produced B-movies with an emphasis on crime, action and exaggerated violence. This set features "Savage Three," "Like Rabid Dogs," "Highway Racer," "No, the Case Is Happily Resolved," and an exclusive new 2K transfer of"Cult 38 Special Squad." "Years of Lead" is a great introductory set to the urban mayhem ofPoliziotteschi.
