New DVD, Blu-ray and digital release highlights for the week of October 12-18, 2020

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — It's an eclectic week packed with a caped crusader, a infamous hockey mask, a Breaking Bad spin-off, some anime, a pair of essential 4K releases and a few indie curiosities. Let's dive in.

New Releases

• Batman: Death in the Family - In 1988 DC asked its readers to determine the fate ofJason Todd, the second version to take on the role as Batman's Robin. So, it make sense that DC would make an interactive short out of the four-issue story.
• Broil - Is a gothic horror of sorts, a dysfunctional family of people who aren't what they initially seem to be. It's a film filled with broad performances and a tag line that gives far too much away. It's in the vein of "Ready or Not" with a twist.
• Carmilla - Inspired bySheridan Le Fanu's tale of a lesbian vampire, "Carmilla"explores the relationship between two teenage girls. It retains the gothic atmosphere, but strays from the more sensational aspects of the original tale. It's more "Portrait of a Lady on Fire" than it is "Dracula."
• Cats and Dogs 3: Paws Unite - I'm unfamiliar with the narrative of the Cats and Dogs franchise. However, it seems that the truce between cats and dogs is broken when a hacker disrupts an audio signal only heard by animals. Or something. This forces a cat and dog agent to save the day and reestablish peace between the species.
• Delirious -Steve Buscemi andMichael Pitt star as a member of the paparazzi and a homeless man with aspirations of being an actor who embark on an adventure that sees them cross paths with pop starK'harma Leeds (Alison Lohman).
• El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie - Picking up where the Breaking Bad series ended, "El Camino" followsJesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) as he tries to outrun his past and start a anew. This steelbook release includes a new commentary with director/writerVince Gilligan and Paul as well as deleted and extended scenes.Vince Gilligan and Paul as well as deleted and extended scenes.
• RWBY: Volume 7 - Ruby's team arrive in Atlas where they look to restore communications throughout Remnant to warn them about Salem.
• Seized -Scott Adkins and Mario Van Peebles star i n this thriller that sees a former special forces agent's on kidnapped.
• Vikings: Season 6 Vol. 1 - HISTORY's historical drama is coming to a close at the end of this season. The season is focused on King Bjorn in Kattegat, Ivar in Rus' and Ubbe in Iceland.

Digital Releases

• Love and Monsters - In this adventure comedy, monsters have forced the human population to live underground, That won't stop Joel Dawson (Dylan O'Brien) from embarking on a 80-mile journey to meet a girl who could be the woman of his dreams.
• Sibyl - This French sees Sibyl, a psychotherapist, cutting back her patient load to write a novel. Unable to find inspiration, Sibyl takes on a new client, a young actress entangled in an affair with a married director.

Catalog Releases

• Claudine - John Berry's"Claudine" was released in 1974. It tells the story of a single mother (Oscar-nominatedDiahann Carroll) in Harlem who relies on welfare to raise her six children. Her life only becomes even more complicated when she falls for a garbage collector (James Earl Jones). It's a beautiful, heartfelt drama about poverty, a broken system and a glimpse of happiness.
• District 9 -Neill Blomkamp's debut feature saved the summer of 2009. It tells the story of a displaced alien race that lives in the slums outside of Johannesburg. There's something of Franz Kafka's "Metamorphosis" and a massive amount of South African social commentary. It was shot in a documentary style that gives the film a roughness, but I'd be interested in seeing what the 4K version does with those sharp edges and worn metallics.
• Mallrats - Arrow FIlm's limited set includes the theatrical, extended and television cuts of Kevin Smith's ode to '90s geekdom. It's a taste that I never acquired, but for those who enjoy the film there's an ample amount of new and archival bonus features to drown yourself in. Act quick, this set is limited.
• Requiem for a Dream - I remember walking from the Tower Theatre with my friend Jeremy shellshocked. We had just watchedDarren Aronofsky's "Requiem for a Dream" and we were trying to wrap our heads around the experience. It's a film about compulsion,addiction, a gameshow, heroin and a red dress. It almost feels wrong to say that it is often a beautiful film and this 4K release emphasizes that with fantastic detail and color. It perfect and horrific.
• Warning from Space - Released in 1956 byDaiei Studios (the future home of "Gamera"), "Warning from Space" was the first Japanese sci-fi movie to be released in color. It's a bizarre alien invasion story written byHideo Oguni ("Seven Samurai") and outlandish art design byTaro Okamoto. An oddity, but one with historic significance.
• Friday the 13th Collection: Deluxe Edition - The previous Friday the 13th Collection from Warner Bros. in 2013 was an impressive 10-disc set. This set includes 16 discs. 7 of the films have new 2K or 4K transfers and includes the unrated cut of "Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday" in HD for the first time. The bonus features have been expanded to include newly discovered outtakes from the second film. It's essentially everything that fans have been asking for with a few unexpected bonus features thrown in.
