New DVD, Blu-ray and digital release highlights for Oct. 25-31, 2021

I'm in way over my head on this year's Holiday Gift Guide (and if you haven't taken a look at the Halloween Gift Guide, you can here), but we'll take a moment to look at this week's releases.

Digital

• Language Lessons - Adam (Mark Duplass) develops a close friendship withCariño (Natalie Morales), his Spanish instructor that he has only ever met online. Relatable and timely, "Language Lessons" features a pair of strong performances in a distanced situation that is increasingly more common.

New DVD and Blu-ray

• The Suicide Squad -Warner Bros. wanted "Suicide Squad" to be their "Guardians of the Galaxy." That should explain why "The Suicide Squad" sees director/writer James Gunn crossing over from Marvel to add his signature to the walls of DC Comics. This time the film comes with a R-rating, lots of four-letter words, some gore and a lot of absurdity. It's unquestionably more fun than "Suicide Squad" ever was. • Stillwater -Bill Baker (Matt Damon), a roughneck and absentee father, searches for redemption for himself and his daughter (Abigail Breslin) who is serving a prison term in France for killing her roommate. Bill travels to France to find a man who could be the key to proving his daughter's innocence.There's an uneven nature to the film, but it is filled with interesting ideas and a strange mix of personalities that are bound together by poor decisions, kindness and hope. I just wish they had involved Amanda Knox in the process. [Full Review]
  
  
• Don't Breathe 2 -Stephen Lang returns as blind man Norman Nordstrom in this sequel that takes place years after the events of the first film. Norman has become a recluse who has raised a young girl in an isolated cabin. When the girl is kidnapped, Norman is forced to revisit his violent past.
  
  
• Walker: Season One - This reboot of the "Walker, Texas Ranger"series with "Supernatural" alum Jared Padalecki taking on the role of Cordell Walker, a Texas Ranger who returns to the disarray of his personal life after a lengthy undercover assignment.
  
  
• For Madmen Only - The name Del Close probably isn't familiar to you unless you've studied the history of improv comedy. Close was a revolutionary teacher who has inspired hundreds of performers with his out-of-the-box thinking. He's also a larger-than-life character who was known to exaggerate his personal experiences and accomplishments to the point of making the truth impossible to pin down. A chaotic documentary for a man who was mayhem incarnate.
  
  
• Skull -Thought lost, the Mask of Anhangá is discovered in an archaeological dig. The artifact is sent to Sao Paulo, but its route is filled with carnage and sacrifice as the power of the mask possesses those who transport it. Contemporary grindhouse cinema from directors/writers Kapel Furman and Armando Fonseca.

• Underworld: 5 Movie Collection 4K UHD - 2003's "Underworld," a film that throws audiences into the middle of an unseen aspect of our world where vampires and werewolves are engaged in a conflict that spans centuries. Where else are you going to find the likes of Kate Beckinsale, Bill Nighy, and Michael Sheen chewing up the scenery with a wonderous sense of panache? Like last year's Resident Evil 4K set, this 5-film set is something of a guilty pleasure. A guilty pleasure I'm more than happy to experience in 4K UHD.
  
  
• Star Trek: The Complete Original Series - All three seasons from the original run of "Star Trek" get the SteelBook treatment in this set celebrating the franchise's 55 years. There's no new material, everything has been carried over from the most recent releases. If you don't already own the set or are a huge fan, the release is solid and recommended.
  
  
• Superman: The Complete Animated Series - "Superman: The Animated Series" was something of a bridge for those who loved the classic Superman mythos and those who preferred the more modern stories that Clark Kent embarked on in the mid-1980s. This isn't an all-powerful Superman. He's certainly not feeble, but he does have to make a considerable effort to pull off his world-saving. The series includes the likes of Supergirl, Lex Luthor, Braniac, Darkseid, and Lois Lane. This set includes all 54 episodes from the three-season run on Blu-ray for the first time.
  
  
• The Incredible Hulk: The Complete Series - This Blu-ray set includes all 80 episodes and two TV movies from the television program's 1977-1982.
  
  
• Deep Red 4K UHD - Dario Argento’s classic 1975 Italian giallo about a musician who witnesses a murder and becomes the ax-wielding killer’s next target. Finally in 4K as it should be.
  
  
• Devi -Satyajit Ray's 1960 film "Devi" sees a wealthy landowner dream that his daughter-in-lawDoyamoyee is a vessel for Kali, a Hindu goddess who controls death and time. The man's faith and place in the community lead others, including Doyamoyee, to believe. Hope and fervor follow. As does the possibility of disappointment, disillusionment and tragedy.
