SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — I know that this is primarily an article dedicated to new streaming titles and the Blu-ray and DVD highlights are a bonus, but I'd much rather be talking about "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" (which debuts on physical formats today) rather than "Strays." I loved "Across the Spider-Verse." I survived "Strays." Mostly. I mostly survived “Strays.”
Since I’m not talking about “Strays,” may I direct your attention to “Birth/Rebirth”? This horror/sci-fi/thriller was one of my favorite films at Sundance 2023. It’s something of a Frankenstein story: Maybe we should let the dead stay dead. We never do.
Elsewhere you'll find the animated "Goodbye Monster," a family -friendly redemption story, as well as the 20th anniversary release of "Oldboy."
I’ll be looking to watch Paul Schrader’s “Master Gardener” at some point. Schrader’s films can be a draining experience.
On the Blu-ray front, I was surprised by the “Sleepy Hollow” 4K release. I love the way that the heads spin before being lopped off. There’s a silliness to the gore that almost makes you cheer the headless horseman. Almost. Maybe just a little. It’s not like the villagers are all that welcoming.
Those looking for something to share with the family, “Matilda” and “The Princess Bride” now come in 4K. Those wanting to start (or continue) their pre-Halloween festivities should note the “Night of the Comet” 4K release from Shout! Factory.
Studio Synopsis:Plucky pup Reggie (Will Ferrell) thought he and his owner Doug (Will Forte) were playing an innocent game of fetch. It isn’t until he meets Bug (Jamie Foxx), a streetwise stray who says only suckers have owners, that Reggie realizes his miserable master intentionally abandoned him in the big city. With two more pooches (Isla Fisher and Randall Park) adding fuel to his furry fire, Reggie goes from cute to cunning as he and Bug concoct a crazy scheme to get back to Doug and give him a big bite between his legs. Revenge has never been this riotous, or this irreverent, as the hilariously absurd antics of these four furballs turn typical animal adventures totally upside down.

Studio Synopsis:A half century after its release, "Midnight Cowboy" remains one of the most original and groundbreaking movies of the modern era. With beguiling performances from Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman as two loners who join forces out of desperation, blacklist survivor Waldo Salt’s brilliant screenplay, and John Schlesinger’s fearless direction, the 1969 film became the only X-rated film to ever win the Academy Award for Best Picture. Its vivid and compassionate depiction of a more realistic, unsanitized New York City and its inhabitants paved the way for a generation’s worth of gritty movies with complex characters and adult themes. But this is not a documentary about the making of "Midnight Cowboy": it is about the deeply gifted and flawed people behind a dark and difficult masterpiece; New York City in a troubled time of cultural ferment; and the era that made a movie and the movie that made an era. Featuring extensive archival material and compelling new interviews, director Nancy Buirski illuminates how one film captured the essence of a time and a place, reflecting a rapidly changing society with striking clarity.
