Ray J shares new details about Whitney Houston's death
Ray J, the singer who had been dating Whitney Houston at the time of her death, is sharing new details about the tragedy.
In an episode of Cam Newton’s “Funky Friday” podcast, Ray J denied he was “in the room when she died.”
“That’s the biggest cap I’ve ever heard. I’ve heard it since the beginning,” the 44-year-old said.
He said he was in San Diego for a show and was going attend “a Clive Davis event,” the next day (likely the record producer’s famous pre-Grammy party).
Ray J says that’s when he and Houston would have publicly announced their relationship, but tragedy struck when he arrived at her hotel.
“When I [pulled] up I got my shoes. I’m ready to go to the event. I just talked to her on the phone,” he recalled. “[But] she’s not there no more. It’s over, and Ray, who is her bodyguard, he found her, and he called me.”
He continued, “They did not let me [go up to her hotel room] at first until everything was cleared and it was just the family. That’s when I was able to go upstairs and see the family. This is you talking like late, late at night.”
The confusion over his presence in the room came from both and her bodyguard both being named Ray, he claimed, made all the worse when people online accused him of being involved in her death.
“I was nowhere to be found, and I hate talking about it because I have so much love for her. I’ve never seen her in that state,” Ray J said. “So to make me that person when I wasn’t even there and then to put murderer on top of that it’s f----- up.”
Houston died on Feb 11, 2012, by accidental drowning in her hotel room the day for the Grammys. Heart disease and cocaine use were listed as contributing factors.
Ray J did not directly answer if he had ever seen Houston do drugs.
“I’ve never done one drug with Whitney, and when people asked me, 'Did Whitney do drugs?' everybody knows certain answers,” he said.
He did admit that Houston’s death was so devastating he “tried hard drugs for the first time after that.”
Ray J met Houston through his sister, singer Brandy, and recalled “it was nothing but good times” with the “I Will Always Love You” singer.
“I love Whitney. I was with Whitney every f------ day. She was one of the most important people to me,” Ray J shared.
