WASHINGTON (SBG) — Alex Rodriguez and Jennifer Lopez are exploring the possibility of purchasing the New York Mets, Sportico reports.
The power couple has reportedly retained bank JPMorgan Chase to raise funding for a possible bid. Rodriguez and Lopez have also partnered with investment partner Wayne Rothbaum, according to a subsequent report from Sportico.
Rothbaum was previously involved with a bid to buy the Miami Marlins alongside former Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush and U.S. Sen. Mitt Romney's son Tagg. Their bid lost to current owners Derek Jeter and New York businessmanBruce Sherman. Jeter was teammates with Rodriguez for the New York Yankees.
Sportico reports negotiations between Rodriguez, Lopez and Rothbaum to partner up for a bid began before the coronavirus outbreak.
When asked about a potential purchase in March, Rodriguez told Jimmy Fallon, "I will say this, if the opportunity came up, I would certainly look at it."
During the "Tonight Show" interview, he also admitted he grew up a Mets fan saying "the best years of my life were 1986 (when the Mets won the World Series) and 2009 when we won (Rodriguez won as a member of the Yankees)."
The current Mets owners, the Wilpon family, had previously sold 80 percent of the team's ownership to hedge fund investor Steve Cohen for $2.6 billion. But negotiations fell through in February, according to The New York Times, causing the team to go back up for sale.
Rodriguez and Lopez might be able to acquire the team at a discount because of coronavirus' financial impact on sports, the New York Post reports. Due to the lack of games being played, there are no ticket sales or in-stadium purchases causing the team's current owners to lose money.
Rodriguez's closest involvement with sports ownership has been as an investor in theNRG esports team. The former MLB All-Star is also a baseball commentator for ESPN and Fox Sports as well as a business podcast host for Barstool Sports.
Lopez's most recent connection to sports is her performance during the Super Bowl halftime show alongside Shakira.
Rodriguez and Lopez got engaged in March of 2019 and were expected to get married this year. The wedding has been put on hold due to the worldwide coronavirus outbreak.
"We're kinda of just in a holding pattern like the rest of the world. Again, it's just something we're going to have to wait and see in a few months how this all pans out," Lopez told talk show host Ellen Degeneres.
The couple recently went viral after dancing to raise money for coronavirus efforts alongside Lopez's ex Diddy.
