SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) – Studio Synopsis: An intimate and revealing portrait of a largely misunderstood American icon, this emotional and engaging documentary about Yogi Berra takes us beyond the caricatures and "Yogisms," and into the heart of a sports legend whose unparalleled accomplishments on the baseball diamond were often overshadowed by his off-the-field persona.
Review: As someone who has spent the past couple of decades watching more than my share of New York Yankees games, it is hard to believe that anyone would ever exclude Yogi Berra from any “best of” or “greatest” list.
But that’s exactly where “It Ain’t Over” begins.
Maybe Yogi’s personality was simply too big, and all the funny stories covered up what was one of the most incredible baseball careers. “It Ain’t Over” isn’t an in-depth look at Berra’s career. You’d need 10 hours to just capture the highs and lows of his playing career. So, this film is more of a sprint through the second half of his life when he transitioned into coaching and gives an ample amount of time to focus on the feud that kept him from visiting Yankee Stadium for more than a decade. There are some tributes from well-known players, coaches, and fans. It’s a little self-serving, but I think Berra deserves that.
“It Ain’t Over” is an incomplete, but charming portrait of one of baseball’s greatest players and one of the most beloved characters (on or off the field).
