Ryan Gosling is on a mission to save the world, if he can remember how, in the new “Project Hail Mary” trailer.

According to the official synopsis, “Science teacher Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) wakes up on a spaceship light years from home with no recollection of who he is or how he got there. As his memory returns, he begins to uncover his mission: solve the riddle of the mysterious substance causing the sun to die out. He must call on his scientific knowledge and unorthodox ideas to save everything on Earth from extinction but an unexpected friendship means he may not have to do it alone.”

But the real breakout of the trailer is the alien creature Gosling befriends, nicknamed Rocky. Rocky doesn’t really have a face, but he’s adorable nonetheless. He also does “puppet shows” for Gosling’s character and his “tiny brain” as he jokes.

“Project Hail Mary” is based on a novel of the same name by Andy Weir, who also wrote the “The Martian,” which got adapted into a film starring Matt Damon.

Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller team up again after working on the “21 Jump Street” movie and its sequel, as well as a ton of producing and writing credits, including, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.” The script was written by Drew Goddard, who wrote the adaptation for “The Martian.”

The film also stars Sandra Hüller, Lionel Boyce, Ken Leung, Milana Vayntrub, and James Ortiz.

“Project Hail Mary” is in theaters March 20, 2026.
