Savannah Guthrie on the 'horrible’ divorce that 'broke her heart’
Savannah Guthrie rarely talks about her first marriage and divorce, but she is finally commenting on the split that “broke her heart.”
In fact, Guthrie was firm on her word about not discussing her divorce in her tell-all book, “Mostly What God Does,” but she’s now explaining why she didn't want to talk about it.
At the same time, she's also opening up a bit about that heartbreaking split.
The 53-year-old “TODAY Show” host revealed she didn’t want to talk about her 2009 divorce, because “I won’t want to talk about getting divorced. It was horrible, sad and it broke my heart. It took me years to recover. I’m not blaming anyone, but I really don’t want to get into it,” the talk show host tells Monica Lewinsky on the July 1 episode of Lewinsky’s “Reclaiming” podcast.
Guthrie was married to BBC journalist Mark Orchard from 2005-2009. They met while covering the Michael Jackson trial.
“Some of it was just too personal and too embarrassing,” she told Lewinsky. “Which I basically said.”
She explained that while she wanted to delve into experiencing adversity, she didn’t’ want to go into the “gory details.”
“The disclaimer was basically like, ‘Look, if you think you’re going to write about faith and try to – certainly not answer – but discuss some of these hardest questions. Despite the fact the picture I’ve drawn I’m not writing a whitewash. I tried to at least talk about some of the hardest subjects there are about loss and about injustice. I try to take on all those things and just examine them and reflect on them – certainly not solve them,” she tell Lewinsky.
Last year, Guthrie published “Mostly What God Does,” which includes a series of personal essays covering the gambit of topics like faith, love, grace, gratitude and more. The book also features a disclaimer letting readers know that the author won’t be touching on some personal matters.
Guthrie is now married to Michael Feldman who she wed in 2014. They share two children together, Vale, 10, and Charley, 8.
