Country music artist Conner Smith, 24, has been charged in relation to the death of 77-year-old Dorothy "Dot" Dobbins on a Germantown crosswalk.

After an investigation by Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD), Smith has been charged with Failure to Yield the Right of Way Resulting in Death, which is a Class A misdemeanor.

Dobbins was struck by Smith's Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck on June 8 while using a marked crosswalk at 3rd Avenue North near Van Buren Street in Germantown. Witnesses say that Smith immediately ran to Dobbins to provide aid until paramedics from the Nashville Fire Department arrived.

Dobbins was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where she later died.

Smith, accompanied by his attorney, received a state misdemeanor citation at the Traffic Division office just after 6 p.m. on the day of the charge.

MNPD officers say they found no evidence of impairment or distracted driving on Smith's part. He is scheduled to appear for booking on the citation on August 7.

Smith released a statement on the crash via social media Friday morning. See the partial statement below:

"Four weeks ago, I was involved in tragic vehicle accident that resulted in the loss of a life. Not a day has gone by that I haven't grieved, prayed, and mourned for Ms. Dobbins and her family. My heart is broken in a way I've never experienced, and I still struggle to fully process the weight of it all."
