'Smurfs' stars John Goodman and Nick Offerman share brotherly love and a special co-star
John Goodman and Nick Offerman are total bros, on and off screen.
Onscreen, they’re Papa Smurf and his brother Ken, respectively, in the new “Smurfs” movie.
“They’re two sides of the same coin, they go about things differently but the duty to their community is central,” Goodman told our entertainment reporter Courtney Tezeno.
But things maybe got a tad awkward offscreen when Offerman’s wife, the hilarious Megan Mullaly, guest-starred as Goodman’s love interest on the last season of “The Righteous Gemstones.”
Scenes between Mullaly and Goodman got pretty steamy, but Offerman was on board.
“I was on set, I was usually on set within three or four feet of the proceedings,” the “Parks and Recreation” star said in his signature deadpan.
He continued joking, “I was the intimacy coordinator on that season of ‘The Righteous Gemstones.’ We set some boundaries.”
Goodman chimed in that Offerman was within “swinging distance” from he and his wife, but that it was “fun kissing her with my hands tied behind my back” in one of the racier scenes.
The actors were clearly joking, but they do share a bond over an unusual hobby: roofing.
“I really enjoy shingling. I highly recommend it, it’s very satisfying,” Offerman said, adding, “Once you get started it’s like laying out a puzzle and it’s quite satisfying and it protects your house from moisture.
“It’s good sweat work,” Goodman added, recalling that he once worked as a cement finisher, saying “that’s the hardest job I ever did.”
Offerman noted, “Whenever the day on set as an actor gets hard, I say, ‘could be pouring concrete.’
“Glad I’m not moving dirt,” Goodman agreed.
“Smurfs” is in theaters July 18.
