"It's not a dream that I even had. I never thought it would be possible, like, playing Smurfette," the singer and beauty mogul said. "As little girls, if you are a fan of the Smurfs, you always wanted to be Smurfette. So having the opportunity to play her and bring my own thing to the character — a big deal, a lot of pressure, and super, super exciting."
The movie’s director, Chris Miller, loved working with Rihanna, who also served as a producer on the film.
“She’s a storyteller, she gets film, she gets storytelling,” he said, adding she brought “great taste” to the table.
John Goodman, who provides the voice of Papa Smurf, says the character is “right up there” with his other iconic voice work in movies like “Monsters, Inc.”
“You’re only as good as what’s on the page and what your companions bring to it. And we’ve got a pretty good cast of characters here. So I think it’s going to turn out good.”
Voicing the villainous brothers Gargamel and Razamel is JP Karliak, who sees the good in at least one member of the family.
“They are brothers, Razamel is the overachiever, he just wants to conquer the universe, he doesn’t have time to deal with family friends or anything silly like that,” he joked. “And Gargamel just wants validation and brotherly love and to feel accept ed and make his brother proud by destroying the Smurfs, like we all do!”
Alex Winter, of “Bill and Ted” fame, voices Hefty Smurf, and praised the film, saying, “It’s such a communal inclusive movie, and I think that’s what’s going to be very joyful. It’s an adventure, don’t get me wrong, it’s not like eating your vegetables.”
“Cobra Kai” star Xolo Maridueña admitted he didn’t fully resonate with his character, Brainy Smurf, a voice of reason.
“No, not the voice of reason, but maybe like the voice of keep it real,” he told Courtney.
“Smurfs” is in theaters July 18.
