Taylor Swift's ex's mom says she's 'glad' she isn't her 'mother-in-law'

Sounds like Taylor Swift would have had some tense holidays with her ex, Matty Healy’s mom.

Denise Welch, mother of The 1975 rocker appeared on “Watch What Happens Live” on Thursday and gave a surprisingly frank response about her son and Swift’s relationship.

“WWHL” host Andy Cohen asked Welch about her reaction to Swift’s album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” which purportedly has multiple songs inspired by Healy.

“Obviously, on pain of death can I talk about that episode, but being her mother-in-law is a role that I am glad that I lost,” Welch said.

She quickly added, “Not that I have anything against her at all! It was just — it was tricky.”

Welch hesitated in continuing, saying, “She — listen, you're not allowed to say anything, and then she writes a whole album about it.”

She did say that “Matty has taken it all in completely good grace.”

Swift and Healy’s relationship was short-lived in 2023, right at the start of her record-breaking Eras Tour. They had first met in 2014, and knew each other throughout the years before starting to date, just a few months after she had split with her boyfriend of six years, actor Joe Alwyn.

In the middle of her tour, Swift dropped “The Tortured Poets Department,” with songs like "The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived," "Fresh Out the Slammer," "The Tortured Poets Department.”

Swift of course has never directly stated who inspired which songs, but fans feel confident they’ve connected the dots to Healy.

Both parties have moved on though. Swift of course is dating Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, while Healy is engaged to model and singer Gabriette Bechtel (who also goes by Gabriella).

“He’s very happy with his amazing fiancée Gabriella, who is gorgeous,” Welch said, adding, “So, we've moved on.”
