Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are bringing 'The Mummy' franchise back to life
"The Mummy" franchise has risen from the dead!
Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are reuniting 26 years after the first movie was released, per Variety.
1999’s "The Mummy" was a huge hit at the box office and spawned two sequels.
Fraser headlined all three films, while Weisz departed after appearing in 2001’s "The Mummy Returns."
The latest sequel will mark the fourth installment in the adventure franchise, which follows treasure hunter Rick O’Connell (Fraser) and his Egyptologist wife, Evelyn (Weisz).
Plot details are being kept under wraps (pun intended), but odds are the new movie will have little to do with 2008’s flop "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" — which effectively buried the franchise for years.
Fans saw a glimmer of hope in 2017 when Universal attempted to resurrect "The Mummy," but the studio went in an entirely new creative direction. Unfortunately, even Tom Cruise couldn’t save the reboot from being sealed in a Rotten Tomatoes sarcophagus of shame. It received a measly 15% Freshness Rating on the site.
So what can audiences expect from the upcoming "Mummy" movie? If Fraser has his way, fans will get the mix of humor and adventure that the Cruise-led reboot lacked.
“The ingredient that we had going for our 'Mummy,' which I didn’t see in the new one, was fun,” Fraser told Variety back in 2022.
Preach, Brendan! Fans want over-the-top action sequences, witty one-liners, goofy romantic tension, and campy yet creepy special effects.
We’ll have to wait and see what happens , but hopefully, the upcoming "Mummy" unearths box office gold instead of another curse.
