Many people remember the story of Amanda Knox, but what do they really know?

A new Hulu series, “The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox,” aims to tell the story, predominantly through Amanda’s experience, with additional unique perspectives across eight episodes.

Knox was accused of murdering her roommate, Meredith Kercher, while both young women were studying abroad in Italy in 2007. Throughout the investigation and early trials, Knox was the subject of wild speculation and intense media scrutiny, with stories both true and false making headlines.

Her ordeal lasted years, through trials and appeals, until she was definitively acquitted in 2015.

Grace Van Patten plays Amanda in the series and found it to be an eye-opening experience.

“I learned so much. I really thought I knew a lot more than I did,” Van Patten said. “But speaking to her and reading as much as I possibly could and watching as much as I could, I couldn’t believe the things that happened that I was unaware of, especially just in terms of the whole case, the contamination of evidence and the lack of evidence and what these two young kids went through.”

Her co-star, Giuseppe De Domenico, plays Raffaele Sollecito, who was charged and tried alongside Amanda in the shocking case that upended their lives for years.

Born and raised in Italy, De Domenico recalled, “I was 14 years old when it happened, I don’t remember which kind of reaction I had. But I remember the pictures of these two young kids all around the media and the newspapers and how every single day, the perception about them changed.”

He added, “People think they know the story but actually they don’t, soGrace [and] I learned a lot of stuff about this story and using this wider lens.”

Both stars had the opportunity to talk with their real-life counterparts to prepare for the series.

“I had this beautiful gift of having Amanda be there and be a part of it. And I thought it was so beautiful how trusting she was of me, which made me feel safe to go and portray it as authentically I felt possible,” Van Patten said. “It was so nice being able to hear her side of things and ask her a million questions, it was really the most valuable part of the whole process.”

De Demonico talked with Sollecito after filming.

“I knew a lot of stuff about him, I read his book twice, I gathered a lot of videos about him, that’s how I prepared for the role. And, for me, it was fair just to introduce [myself] ‘Hi, I’m Giuseppe, I’m the actor that’s pretending to be you in this series.’”

The first two episodes of “The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox” are streaming now on Hulu, with new episodes premiering Wednesdays.
