Weekend Box Office: May 3-5, 2019

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — “Avengers: Endgame” will finish its second weekend with a three-day total of $145 million. Sure, that’s a 59% drop, but those numbers are misleading because of how many people were seeing the film throughout the week. The domestic total is $619 million. The worldwide total passed the $2 billion threshold on Saturday. It currently sits at $2.18 billion worldwide. “Endgame” has a solid chance of surpassing “Avatar’s” $2.788 billion, but it will depend heavily on the film’s international numbers where the movie has earned more than $1.5 billion since opening last week.

The Intruder,” a mystery drama that finds Meagan Good and Michael Ealy playing a couple who buy a house, but are unable to persuade the neurotic previous owner to leave, was something of a surprise as it bested expectations and opened with $11 million in its first weekend. Considering the film only cost $8 million to make, Sony and Screen Gems must be thrilled with those numbers.

The pairing of Charlize Theron and Seth Rogan propelled Lionsgate’s romantic comedy “Long Shot” to $10 million. That’s less than the expected $12 million, but reviews from critics and audiences alike have been positive and the word-of-mouth might be able to keep the film from dipping too much over the next week.

Some awarded STX’s “UglyDolls” the dubious title of “First Box Office Bomb of 2019” (apparently “Hellboy” has already been forgotten by some, I wish I was included). Opening with just $8.5 million, short of the already modest prediction of $10.5 million, the animated film is going to struggle to make $20 million. The film’s budget was only $45 million, at the lower end of the scale for a theatrically release animated film, but it does make me wonder if Hulu is regretting their decision to greenlight a series. Sure, it worked for Netflix and DreamWorks Animation, but as much as it wants to be “Trolls,” “UglyDolls” fails to be anything but a pale copy of that and other films.

Marvel’s “Captain Marvel” rounds out the top five with $4.2 million. The film has earned $430 million domestically, nearly $700 million overseas for a worldwide total of $1.1 billion after 59 days in release. That’s roughly half of what “Endgame” has done in 10 days.
