West Palm Beach sailor set to represent USA in Olympic kiteboarding debut

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — A West Palm Beach resident will represent Team USA in kiteboarding at the Olympics.

Markus Edegran, 30, hailing from New York, started his sailing career at the age of eight on the Hudson River. He began racing at ten and continued his career at St. Mary's College of Maryland, according to U.S. Sailing.

Edegran's journey in kiteboarding began in 2018, as reported by U.S. Sailing, with a commitment to qualify for the 2024 Olympics by 2019.

In an interview with CBS12's Stefany Valderrama, Edegran stated, "It is an honor to represent the country."

During the interview, Edegran explained that this is the first Summer Olympics to involve kiteboarding.

Edegran has already arrived in Marseille, Southern France, for final preparations, which include tapering and mental readiness. He mentioned that he is adapting to Marseille's water and weather patterns.

When asked for advice for young kids aspiring to compete in the Olympics, Edegran emphasized, "You gotta love the sport that you do. Get in early as a kid. If you really love a sport, then stick to it, and really anything can happen."

Edegran currently holds the #4 ranking in the world, according to the World Sailing Formula Kite Ranking.

The sailing events for the Olympics will take place from July 28 to August 8.
