The Sundance Film Festival kicked off last night and while I won’t be spending much time in Park City, I will still be watching as many films as I can over the next 10 days in Salt Lake City. I'll be posting reviews throughout the festival. Those looking to experience Sundance remotely can buy tickets to online screenings that start on January 25 and continue through to the 28th (tickets are limited and are selling out) at festival.sundance.org.

For those looking for something intelectual “Freud’s Last Session” is expanding to additional markets. The film is essentially a day spent with Sigmund Freud and C.S. Lewis as they explore the nature of their own beliefs about God, life, and knowing when to let go. It’s beautifully shot and the performances from Anthony Hopkins and Matthew Goode are solid. It’s all a bit heady and not nearly as deep as I hoped. Still, there are interesting ideas that kept me engaged throughout.

Here’s a look at what other options you have available to watch between the football games.

Death and Other Details (Hulu)

Studio Synopsis: Set amidst the glamour of the global elite, “Death and Other Details” centers on the brilliant and restless Imogene Scott (Violett Beane), who finds herself in the wrong place/wrong time (okay, it was kinda her fault) and becomes the prime suspect in a locked room murder mystery. The setting? A lavishly restored Mediterranean ocean liner. Suspects? Every pampered guest and every exhausted crew member. The problem? To prove her innocence, she must partner with a man she despises—Rufus Cotesworth (Mandy Patinkin), the world’s greatest detective.

Freud's Last Session (Theaters)

Studio Synopsis: London, September 3rd, 1939. The world is on the brink of war. In his final days, Sigmund Freud, a recent escapee with his daughter from the Nazi regime, receives a visit from the formidable Oxford Don C.S. Lewis (The Chronicles of Narnia). On this day, two of the greatest minds of the twentieth century intimately engage in a monumental session over the belief in the future of mankind and the existence of God.

Sunrise (Theaters/On Demand)

Studio Synopsis:When an ex-cop named Fallon returns to the scene of a horrific crime, the residents of a rural town soon discover that this dark visitor is really a vampire who feeds on blood and fear. After he is befriended by a kind immigrant family, the instinctive killer is faced with a choice between revenge and redemption. Guy Pearce and Alex Pettyfer star in this thrilling tale penned by Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Ronan Blaney.

American Nightmare (Netflix)

Studio Synopsis:After a home invasion and abduction, a young couple's recounting of the events is too far fetched for the police to believe. Why did the victims seem so calm? Was it all a hoax? From the filmmakers behind The Tinder Swindler, this three-part docuseries unravels the consequences of our cultural rush to judgment, and the damage done when law enforcement decides the truth can’t possibly be true.

The Bequeathed (Netflix)

Studio Synopsis:After the death of an unknown uncle, a woman inherits a burial ground and finds herself in the center of a string of murders and dark secrets.

Love on the Spectrum: Season 2 (Netflix)

Studio Synopsis:Emmy Award-winning docu-reality series, Love on the Spectrum U.S., is an insightful and warm-hearted series following people on the autism spectrum as they navigate the world of dating and relationships. In its second season, this U.S. based series tells the stories of a unique and diverse cast of characters — including new romantic hopefuls and familiar faces — searching for something we all hope to find, love.

June (Paramount+)

Studio Synopsis: A feature-length documentary about country singer/songwriter June Carter Cash featuring rare and never-before-seen archival material that reveals the extraordinary life work of Carter Cash and her iconic entertainment career, alongside interviews with the monumental woman herself, as well as family, admirers, and friends including Dolly Parton, Reese Witherspoon, and Willie Nelson.

On the Roam (Max)

Studio Synopsis: An eight-part cinematic documentary series following Jason Momoa as he travels the country chasing art, adventure, and friendship through the lens of craftsmanship. The eight-episode series will debut two episodes weekly leading up to the season finale on February 8.

Sort Of: Final Season (Max)

Studio Synopsis: The series’ final season, finds Sabi (Bilal Baig) coming to terms with feelings of grief and an unexpected sense of freedom following the death of their father. Without the constraints of living up to dad’s expectations, they confront big questions about their identity, prompting some massive life choices. With the entire ensemble grappling with aftermaths this season, a rebirth comes in a sort of messy, sort of hopeful, sort of “Sort Of” way.

The Woman in the Wall (Paramount+)

Studio Synopsis: A new six-episode thriller that centers on Lorna Brady (Ruth Wilson), a woman from the small, fictional Irish town of Kilkinure, who wakes one morning to find a corpse in her house. Chillingly, Lorna has no idea who the dead woman is or if she, herself, might be responsible for the apparent murder. That’s because Lorna has long suffered from extreme bouts of sleepwalking ever since she was ripped from her life at the age of 15 and incarcerated in The Kilkinure Convent, a (fictional) home to one of Ireland’s infamous Magdalene Laundries for women. There, Lorna gave birth to her daughter Agnes, who cruelly was taken from her and whose fate Lorna never has known. Detective Colman Akande (Daryl McCormack) is now also on Lorna’s tail for a crime seemingly unrelated to the body she has discovered in her house. His scathing wit hides a quiet sadness, and when he meets Lorna, he finds himself forced to confront his own haunting secrets. As Colman searches for a murderer and Lorna searches for her daughter, their paths collide in ways they never could have anticipated.
