What to watch in theaters and at home this weekend May 19-21, 2022

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — I was out last week and didn't have the opportunity to share my love for "STILL: A Michael J. Fox Movie." It's not easy to watch someone you love struggle and fight their way through difficulty. It is, however, incredibly inspiring.

There's already more than enough reason to subscribe to Apple TV+: This just one more.

I suspect a lot of you already have plans to see "Fast X," the latest installment in The Fast Saga. If you’re a fan, I don’t see why you won’t enjoy the film (just be warned that it ends with a lot of cliffhangers). If you aren’t a fan, I still think “Fast Five” is the best entry point and this film ties in directly with that film.

Those looking for something more art house should consider "Carmen," an experimental film that combines song and dance withcontemporary issues like PTSD in former soldiers and illegal immigration.

Here are ten options for your weekend:

STILL: A Michael J. Fox Movie

Studio Synopsis:The film, which will incorporate documentary, archival and scripted elements, will recount Fox’s extraordinary story in his own words — the improbable tale of an undersized kid from a Canadian army base who rose to the heights of stardom in 1980s Hollywood. The account of Fox’s public life, full of nostalgic thrills and cinematic gloss, will unspool alongside his never-before-seen private journey, including the years that followed his diagnosis, at 29, with Parkinson’s disease. Intimate and honest, and produced with unprecedented access to Fox and his family, the film will chronicle Fox’s personal and professional triumphs and travails and will explore what happens when an incurable optimist confronts an incurable disease. With a mix of adventure and romance, comedy and drama, watching the film will feel like well, like a Michael J. Fox movie.

Fast X

Carmen

Studio Synopsis: "Carmen" follows a young and fiercely independent woman who is forced to flee her home in the Mexican desert following the brutal murder of her mother. Carmen (Melissa Barrera) survives a terrifying and dangerous illegal border crossing into the US, only to be confronted by a lawless volunteer border guard, who cold-bloodedly murders two other immigrants in her group. When the border guard and his patrol partner, Aidan (Paul Mescal)—a Marine with PTSD—become embroiled in a deadly standoff, Carmen and Aidan are forced to escape together. They make their way north towards Los Angeles in search of Carmen’s mother’s best friend, the mercurial Masilda (Rossy de Palma) and owner of La Sombra nightclub – a sanctuary of music and dance. Carmen and Aidan find both solace and their unwavering love for one another in the safety of Masilda’s magical refuge, but time is running out as the police hunt closes in.

Reaction: A really good movie made all the better by a spectacular third act. One of the best and unique films that you'll see all year.
