If you can find a theater playing David Fincher's newest film, "The Killer," I highly recommend seeing it. Yes, you could wait for the movie to come to Netflix on November 10, but the idea of not seeing a Fincher film in a theater feels like a violation of some unspoken code.

“The Killer” stars Michael Fassbender as an assassin who sees his life turned upside down when he fails to do a job. It’s not a bright and shinny experience. It’s also more restrained than Fincher has been in the past. The violence comes in bursts. It’s not an action film. The pace is more European than American in that regard. It’s not a horror film either, but the sense of doom and dread is omnipresent. Fassbender’s unnamed character is terrifying in the best of ways. I love the film. It most certainly won’t be as enthusiastically embraced by everyone as it was by me.

If "The Killer" isn't playing in your area, you do have many other options this weekend including theatrical releases of "Five Nights at Freddy's" (also on Peacock), and "After Death," a documentary from Angel Studios ("Sound of Freedom") that explores and supports the idea of an afterlife. It isn’t scientific. It never claims to be. It’s also not overtly religious. Spiritual, yes. The special message from the filmmakers at the end of the film is the only moment that made me cringe.

Those who prefer a weekend in might consider Netflix’s “Pain Hustlers,” the second season of HBO’s “The Gilded Age,” or Showtime’s “Fellow Travelers.” Those wanting to stick with the horror theme can find “When Evil Lurks” on Shudder, "Sister Death" on Netflix, "The Enfield Poltergeist" on Apple TV+, or “The Nun II” on Peacock.
