We're wrapping up October with a few horror films and a western dressed up in its space opera clothes.

The Craft: Legacy

"The Craft: Legacy" is a sequel to 1996's "The Craft." Like the first film, "Legacy" sees three teens befriend the new girl in school believing that she'll be the perfect candidate to complete their witch coven. The original was dark, but never serious. "Legacy" is all over the map. It feels like two films, a dark and campy melodrama and a serious teenage coming-of-age drama. Had the film been one or the other it probably would have worked. There's a bit of nostalgia for those who enjoyed the 1996 film, but not nearly enough. At least the cast is fairly strong and I'm not about to give up on writer/directorZoe Lister-Jones.

His House

If you're looking for a horror film that eschews the status quo, I highly recommend "His House." The film sees a pair ofSouth Sudan refugees arrive in London where they are given a home to live in that is filthy and in disrepair. It's also haunted.Remi Weekes' feature-length debut is magical, frightening and beautifully shot. Lead actors Sope Dirisu and Wunmi Mosaku are pitch perfect. Seeing as it is rated TV-14, its also something that can be enjoyed by those who stay clear of R-rated material.

Where to watch: Netflix

Spell

"Spell" seesMarquis T. Woods (Omari Hardwick), a man who came from humble roots and is now a very successful businessman, and his family are involved in a small airplane accident in the backwoods of Appalachia. When he wakes, he is alone, in bed in a ramshackle home. His hosts claim that he was alone in the airplane when they found them. They are kind, simple people who live without modern comforts. Hurt in the crash, Woods is in no shape to leave to search for his family. Besides, they always lock the door. "Spell" is a slow burn with an explosive ending. Certainly worth your attention. Just be careful around nails.

Star Wars: The Mandalorian

The wait is over. Well, somewhat. Today saw the release of the first episode of the second season of "Star Wars: The Mandalorian." More of The Child (aka Baby Yoda) will hopefully go a long way. This episode is something of a monster hunt packed with all sorts of Easter eggs and a massive reveal in the final shot before the credits roll.
