Who is calling Taylor Swift the 'most dangerous' celebrity?!
Taylor Swift fans, beware! The “Cruel Summer” singer might pose a danger to you if you aren’t paying attention.
Apparently, Taylor is at the top of McAfee, the anti-virus software company, list of the Most Dangerous Celebrity: Deepfake Deception List.
That means Taylor’s likeness is being used (very much against her will and very much illegally) for AI deepfakes by scammers trying to get money or important data out of you like your credit card or social security numbers.
Coming in second on the list is Scarlett Johansson, followed by Jenna Ortega, Sydney Sweeney, Sabrina Carpenter, Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Billie Eilish, Emma Waston, and Kendrick Lamar.
According to McAfee’s survey of 8,600 people, 72% of people have seen a fake celebrity endorsement, 39% have clicked on one, and 1 in 10 people actually lost money, an average of $525 per victim.
A woman in France lost $800,000 to a scammer pretending to be Brad Pitt, conning her into paying for medical care and making er believe she and the “Ocean’s 11” star were dating, per People.
Scammers prey on your fandom and parasocial relationship, aka the feeling we really know the celebrity on a personal level. But it’s a one way street. Taylor, or any other celebrity, will not DM you asking you for money for anything. Trust they have enough to cover their business.
There are ways to protect yourself, like pausing before you click on anything, verifying that the clip is from the celebrity’s official account, looking for signs of AI manipulation, like a weird tone or off movements, and never sharing personal details or payment information.
