Why Savannah Chrisley 'almost went to jail' over a customs dispute
Savannah Chrisley almost ended up serving some jail time, which of course stressed out her parents.
On her “Unlocked” podcast, she brought the subject up, teasing, “Should we tell my story about how I almost went to jail?”
Her dad, Todd Chrisley, quipped he would rather she didn’t talk about anyone in the family going to jail (referring to his and wife Julie Chrisley’s past experiences).
Savannah proceeded anyway, explaining she ran into trouble coming back into the United States from her European vacation.
“So I didn’t know, and this is just a PSA for people. When you are traveling, you have to declare if you make purchases overseas, which I did,” she recalled. “I declared.”
She explained when you travel abroad, customs agents ask you how much you spent during your trip, and she gave an estimated number since she didn’t keep track of all her purchases.
“I gave them a number and I didn’t know it was this serious,” she said.
Turns out she was a bad estimator because the agent had her step aside to go “through a different process.”
Savannah said she handed over everything she bought, receipts included, and was told “Your number is far off.”
She apologized to the agent and admitted she hadn’t been keeping track of how much she spent while traveling through several countries. They warned her they could “seize” her souvenirs and fine her $10,000.
“I was sweating, I was sweating bullets,” Savannah said. “[My brother] Grayson and his girlfriend [Skylar Ehlinger], she felt my back after she died laughing ‘cause that sweatshirt was soaked. I was like, ‘Oh my god, I’m about to go to prison right now. Now this is not fun.’”
The “Chrisley Knows Best” alum got the issue sorted out, but admitted she was stressed about the attention she would have gotten if she’d been in serious trouble.
“I was freaking out, if I had gotten my stuff confiscated, you would have seen me on the news,” she joked.
