Educator produces music video to inspire students during Black History Month

WASHINGTON (TND) — Nationally recognized educator and songwriter Thomas Mayfield is at it again with an inspirational song, but this time his lyrics are aimed to empower young Black girls.

With the help of former and current students, Mayfield produced the music video "We Only Sit In The Front."

Mayfield explains the importance of the music video and the song's lyrics in the following statement given to The National Desk:

"Nationally recognized educator and songwriter is empowering you African-American students to represent for themselves, their community and their families in such an inspiring way. With the help of current and former students, he was able to take a classic song by hip-hop group OutKast and spin it into a tribute to the great Rosa Parks! “We Only Sit In The Front” is a beautiful song and video that highlights young African-American queens of all sizes, shapes, ages and complexions!

It features one student in particular, Jailah Williams who was a former 5th grade student of Mr. Mayfield! Jailah has been featured on local news, radio and nationally on CBS This Morning as well as The Ellen Show. Back in August, Mr. Mayfield presented Jailah with s surprise 1,500 scholarship using his educator bonus for her to use and access once her college career begins!

'We Only Sit In The Front' is masterfully written and interpreted to say the least. Additionally, the video was shot on location at one of the fastest up and coming businesses in Fort Worth, Black Coffee! Mr. Mayfield is now in his first year as a Campus Instructional Coach for the Fort Worth I.S.D., where he helps to build instructional capacity for new and tenured teachers."
