HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (WTGS) — A 93-year-old Hilton Head Island woman is locked in a legal battle over land that's been in her family for decades and celebrities are joining the cause.
Josephine Wright is being sued by Bailey Point Investment LLC for property that they want to develop. The investment group is developing 27 acres for 147 units near Wright's home, and she said when she refused to sell them her property, they sued.
Wright, who has 40 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren and 16 great-great-grandchildren, said she's fighting for the property that's been in her family since the Civil War.
A GoFundMe created to help Wright with her legal fees has eclipsed $250,000 in donations, with several celebrities aiding the cause. NBA player Kyrie Irving donated $40,000 to the page, and rapper Snoop Dogg pitched in $10,000.
Snoop Dogg posted about the donation on Instagram, saying "Josephine Wright we stand with u !!" His donation came through his record label, Death Row Records.
The two parties have filed several records addressing the suit over the past couple of months. In a filing from June 22, Wright's attorneys alleged that Bailey Point used "a consistent and constant barrage of tactics of intimidation, harassment, [and] trespass" to try to force Wright to sell her property.
On Monday, the company filed a response to Wright's latest filing, denying "each and every allegation set forth" by Wright.
WTGS previously reached out to Bailey Point's attorney with a request for comment but did not receive a repsonse.
