A local grocery chain announced a pay increase Tuesday to support all of its workers while the country grapples with the coronavirus outbreak.

Kroger will pay all of its grocery workers, including supply chain, manufacturing, pharmacy and call center associates, a "hero bonus" for working on the frontlines of the crisis.

The bonus will amount to a $2 premium above their standard base rate of pay for hours worked from March 29 through April 18.

The grocery chain will give its employees the bonuses weekly to ensure its workers have immediate access to the extra money.

“Our associates have displayed the true actions of a hero, working tirelessly on the front lines to ensure everyone has access to affordable, fresh food and essentials during this national emergency,” said Rodney McMullen, Kroger’s chairman and CEO.

The grocery chain had already announced a one-time bonus to frontline grocery store workers March 21, which will be disbursed April 3.
