Dozens gathered at Maryland Oncology Hematology in Prince George’s County, Maryland, to mark a major milestone for a patient.

Thursday marked Larry Koppe's 100th treatment over the last 10 years of fighting for his life through his cancer journey.

His wife, Dolores, helped to make the day a celebration.

“Go Larry!” the crowd screamed. "He is our hero."

“Sometimes this gets on my mind so heavy. It’s been 10 years now and it never goes away” said Koppe.

Koppe was diagnosed with leukemia and non-Hodgkins lymphoma and said each treatment gives him four more weeks of life for the last 10 years.

Every five weeks, he goes in for a four-hour treatment to keep him alive.

“It keeps me alive," said Koppe. "I know that what they are doing for me will keep me alive for the next four weeks."

His family and friends surprised him on his 100th treatment -- he said it’s a big milestone because others don’t make it to this point.

“My friends were diagnosed at the same time and they are no longer with us anymore," Koppe said. "So, today 100 -- I didn’t think I would ever reach 100."

“Every five weeks when he goes, I sit on pins and needles waiting for the call that everything is ok,” Dolores said.

Doctor Sun has been treating Larry the entire time.

“The important thing is if something doesn’t feel right, don’t wait," Dr. Sun said. "It’s important to see a specialist to receive appropriate treatment."
