(WKRC) - McDonald's reacted to viral videos spreading on TikTok related to its new Grimace milkshake.

The trend took the social media platform by storm after users uploaded unsettling shorts that portrayed "horrifying side effects" of drinking the purple milkshake. The hashtag #grimaceshake has amassed over 631 million views, thus far.

The clips all begin very similarly, with creators trying out the limited-time milkshake, only for the video to cut to an uncanny scene of them pretending to be unconscious or playing dead with purple liquid oozing from their mouths.

McDonald's played into the viral trend and shared a close-up of Grimace, who is an "enormous taste bud," on Instagram. The post read "mee pretending i dont see the grimace shake trendd."

The Grimace Shake first debuted on July 12 as part of the Grimace Birthday Meal. Along with the shake, customers were allowed a choice of a Big Mac or a 10-piece chicken nugget and fries.

McDonald's has not disclosed the exact flavor of the milkshake, but it was described as "inspired by Grimace's iconic color and sweetness."
