While in class at Sebastian River Middle School in Florida, a young boy experienced a Christmas miracle.

The middle schooler's mother,Indian River County Sheriff's Office Deputy and Army Reservist Tiffiany Welsh, returned home for her training, which she has been gone for since July. During English class, her son dropped his hand in disbelief when she walked in, rose from his desk, trotted to her then embraced her in a bear hug.

"Merry Christmas," Welsh told her son as they held each other.

The Army Reservist and deputy has served her community for nearly four years, committing most of her time as a school resource officer at Vero Beach High School.

One day, she decided she wanted to do and give more: serve her country. Basic training began about five months ago, which she has since successfully completed, then she entered Officer Candidate’s School. The deputy will graduate in January 2024 as a Second Lieutenant.

Once graduated, Welsh will return to Indian River County to dually serve in her role as a deputy and Second Lieutenant in the Army Reserves.

"Sheriff Eric Flowers and the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office thank you Deputy Welsh, and all of our Sheriff’s Office family who are members of the military, past and present, for your service," the agency said.
