New troll sculpture arrives in West Seattle with more planned around the region

WEST SEATTLE, Wash. (KOMO) — The Fremont Troll now has company in West Seattle's Lincoln Park.

On Friday, artists, including those from the Muckleshoot Tribe, and city leaders unveiled the newest giant, hand-built troll.

The installation has been four years in the making.

"It's a step that, climbing out of this pandemic and climbing out of some of what we see in this world, we are on the right trajectory for getting things back to normalcy for our children," said Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell at the grand unveiling Friday.

The wooden sculpture is the third troll project in the Northwest. Danish environmental artist Thomas Dambo plans to install six trolls, all made from recycled materials, around the region.

The first was in Portland, another one is on Bainbridge Island.

Dambo said the Lincoln Park Troll named "Bruunidun," or "Idun" for short, is displayed playing an orca song on two flutes, asking them where have they gone?

"We have made a big flute from a dead piece of wood in Denmark and a big flute from a dead piece of drift wood here in Seattle," explained Dambo.

Another troll is under construction in Issaquah with more to follow on Vashon Island and in Ballard.
