FAYETTE COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRC) - After students scored poorly on math and reading tests, a school cancelled field trips for everybody. Parents think it's unfair and "a bad decision."
A school board member from Fayette County Schools made a surprise post on Facebook that said, "Due to low test scores, Dr. Hamlett has cancelled all field trips. Teachers have been instructed to concentrate on math and reading."
One parent, Ashley Turner, thinks the school needs to focus on improving their teaching rather than restricting field trips.
"They don't have teachers to teach the kids so how are they going to have higher test scores when half of them... they went a whole year last year without a math teacher," Turner said.
Bart Gilmer, owner of Falcon Ridge Farm, is upset about the change too. His educational working farm is a popular destination for school field trips.
"Personally I think it's a bad decision," Gilmer said. "I can't see a whole lot of advantages for it. On a good year we'll have 6,000 to 7,000 kids come out here and experience life on the farm and get to see some stuff that they may have never seen before and may never get to see again."
For Gilmer, no field trips could mean a massive loss for his business.
"We would certainly take a hit," he said. "I don't see where taking field trips away from them is going to help test scores at the end of the day."
What do you think? Is this a fair reaction from the school board?
