SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — Tater Tot, the stray Utah kitten with special needs, whose heartwarming story captured the attention of social media users worldwide, has passed away.
Ash Houghton, Tater Tot's foster mom and the spokesperson for the Salt Lake City-based rescue group Kitty CrusAIDe, shared the sad news.
Tater Tot, known for his adorable resilience despite facing multiple health concerns, had become a social media sensation, dominating Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, Instagram, and more with his endearing image.
His journey, from being found as a tiny kitten to inspiring a global community focused on kindness, humor, and compassion, touched millions of hearts.
Houghton explained that Tater Tot's energy had been gradually decreasing over the past week, and they were hoping antibiotics could treat an illness.
The kitten had also shown signs of pneumonia, which led to Houghton starting pneumonia protocol with medications and a nebulizer.
Despite these efforts, Tater Tot passed away suddenly in Houghton's hands.
The vet had previously raised the possibility of a heart condition, but Tater Tot's small size prevented any tests from being conducted. Houghton believes that he may have had an enlarged heart, which ultimately led to his passing.
Throughout his short life, Tater Tot's resilience served as an inspiration, showing that even amid struggles, there is always something worth fighting for.
Kitty CrusAIDe is a cat rescue organization that focuses on helping feral cats, including spaying and neutering. The group knew that Tater Tot's medical expenses would be significant, prompting them to hold a fundraiser naming contest for him.
Houghton, while heartbroken over the loss of Tater Tot, expressed gratitude to everyone who supported and cheered for him.
She shared the impact that he had on her and the rescue community, reminding everyone of the difficulties and joys of working with animals, especially those with disabilities.
In honor of Tater Tot's memory, Houghton encourages people to donate to their local shelters, helping other animals in need.
