UPDATE: Upon further review, those weren't worms raining down in the viral video.

Theworm-like debris covering cars turned out to be flowers from poplar trees, which was one of the possibilities mentioned below.

That may bring some relief to the people inLiaoning Province who were holding umbrellas to avoid them.

Something strange is happening with the weather, in a way, in part of China.

In fact, it's so unusual that people are being warned to stay inside or carry umbrellas because of worms.

This is far from everyday rain. It’s raining worms.

The New York Post reports it’s happening in the Liaoning province, which is between Beijing and North Korea.

Perhaps scarier is that there’s no official word for why this is happening.

The scientific journal Mother Nature Network suggested the worms had been picked up by a strong wind after a storm.

Others say they’re not really worms but are poplar flowers that resemble worms.

Whatever it is, the Post compared the scene to iguanas, an invasive species, falling from trees when it gets cold in Florida.
