On Veterans Day, the nation honored those who have served, but for one local hero, the celebration continued with a personal milestone.

Anthony Simeone, a 98-year-old World War II veteran, was awarded his high school diploma from Cranston East, a recognition nearly a lifetime in the making.

"I never expected to be honored like this," said Simeone, who accepted his honorary certificate in the school gymnasium with the enthusiasm of a young graduate.

Born on July 4, 1926, Simeone has been a lifelong resident of Cranston.

He left school at 16 to work during the Great Depression and was drafted into the Army at 18.

Simeone served for two years during World War II.

"The Battle of the Bulge was the single deadliest World War II battle for the United States. It showed the world that Hitler could be defeated at the time. The Battle of the Bulge was the last major German offensive campaign on the western front," he said.

After returning from the war, Simeone continued his education, earning a GED from the New England Technical Institute of Technology.

However, he had never experienced a graduation ceremony or received his high school diploma until now.

Surrounded by loved ones, the proud veteran, father, and grandfather expressed his gratitude.

"I am so honored," he said, reflecting on the recognition as both a graduate and an American hero.

NBC 10's Erin Coogan contributed to this report.
